The one square metre of wall that takes everything: heat, grease, splatter and scrubbing. Built properly, it is also the best-looking part of the splash.
If you only ever tile one part of a kitchen, this is the part. The wall directly behind and beside the range takes concentrated heat, airborne grease and the scrubbing that follows. It also faces you every time you cook, so it is the most visually exposed section of the whole splash.
Standard cement grout behind a range absorbs grease, darkens and then resists everything short of a blade. Narrow joints and a quality sealer, or an epoxy grout, change that outcome entirely.
Glass and some natural stone behave badly with intense localised heat. Ceramic and porcelain handle a range wall without drama and cost less.
Tiles popping off above a stove usually means the wrong adhesive or an unprepared wall behind them — not bad tile.
The splash has to stop cleanly at the base of the hood. If the hood moves later, the tile line looks wrong forever.

Can you tile just the stove wall?

Is peel-and-stick good enough behind a stove?
It is a real product and it is cheap, but heat and grease are exactly what it handles worst. It is a short-term cover, not a surface that will still look right in three years.
Does the tile need to go up to the hood?
Not always, but it usually looks better and cleans easier if it does. We plan that at the estimate — see full-height splash.
